1909 VDB Lincoln Cent
Mintage:  27,995,000

The 1909 VDB is a fairly common
Lincoln cent.

The initials V.D.B. are those of Victor D.
Brenner who designed both the
obverse and reverse of the Lincoln
Cent.  Days into the production of the
Lincoln Cent,  Washington D.C.
ordered the Mint to remove the initials.
Government officials felt that the initials
were too prominent on the reverse.

Brenner's initials were replaced on the
bottom of Lincoln's bust in 1918.

Because of the fact that 1909 was the
first year of Lincoln cents, these coins
were widely hoarded.  Uncirculated
examples can be obtained for much
lower costs than other early date
Lincolns.
